Summary of West Island food hub logistics feasibility study
How can growers on the West Island, more specifically in Pierrefonds-Roxboro, Île-Bizard-Sainte-Geneviève and Senneville, supply Montrealers experiencing food insecurity?
This is the key question that the feasibility study seeks to answer, by assessing the physical and digital infrastructure needs and potential to collectively manage the logistics of a food hub.
At the end of the study, the feasibility of such infrastructures is undeniably confirmed. Moreover, the needs and criteria for this ambitious project are now well defined:
1. A site close to the farms;.
2. Designed and equipped for: aggregation, refrigerated storage, primary processing and marketing of a variety of garden produce.
The West Island food hub will provide the means to increase production in terms of quantity, quality and variety, while extending the season thanks to favourable storage conditions.
This hub is therefore not only feasible, but highly desirable, in order to implement elements of collective solutions to support and strengthen existing local agricultural initiatives and to initiate new ones capable of addressing the challenge of food insecurity in Montreal.
