The Solidarity Lever – A review of the lessons learned and the project’s impact
Between 2021 and 2025, the Solidarity Lever supported community-led social innovation initiatives in the agri-food sector, with the aim of improving access to healthy, local and affordable food in the Greater Montreal area. As part of the Local and Integrated Food System in Montreal (SALIM) program, the Solidarity Lever is based on an approach rooted in equity, collaboration, and the recognition of the expertise of those working in the field and project leaders.
By providing personalized guidance, flexible financial support and access to a network of expertise, the Solidarity Lever has enabled community organizations to develop, consolidate and organize practical solutions in food logistics, including procurement, storage, distribution, governance and resource sharing. The program aimed to remove the systemic barriers encountered by local initiatives and support their sustainability.
This report documents the conditions under which the program was implemented, the results observed and the lessons learned from this support program. It is intended for organizations, public authorities, funders, and food system stakeholders who wish to draw inspiration from these lessons in order to build a more inclusive, equitable, and resilient food ecosystem.
